OK, so I may have mentioned that I am having a Starbucks breakfast sandwich thing. There was a point last week when I had to sit down with my bad self, and discuss the financial consequences of visiting Starbucks on a daily basis.
This week, however, by happy accident, I stumbled across Jimmy Dean D-Lights. They have less calories, more variety and equivalent protein to the Starbucks breakfast sandwiches. They are $5.99 for a box of four, as opposed to around $4 for a Starbucks breakfast sandwich with which you almost always buy coffee.
Now, I have tried two kinds of Jimmy Dean D-lights: English muffin and Bagel. Both types of sandwich include egg whites, low-fat cheese, and turkey sausage, as well as about 260 calories and 18 grams of protein. The english muffin sandwich only has about 2 grams (7%) of your daily fiber, where the bagel sandwich has about 20% of your daily fiber.
The equivalent Starbucks sandwich is about 300 calories, 18 grams of protein and 16% of your daily fiber. So, I feel like Jimmy Dean is the dark horse who wins the race. I would never have thought it. I would have assumed that anything titled "Jimmy Dean D-light" would be a heart attack in a styrofoam bowl or would have involved an FDA mandated label that said that the contents would take five year off your life. I have been pleasantly surprised.
Now, the Jimmy Dean D-lights are geared for a breakfast on the go, AND, per this idea, they only give microwave instructions which leave the bread a bit rubbery. With a couple of days of experimentation, I have found that you can still have a quick breakfast with a little bit more planning. I preheat the oven to 450 degrees and wrap one of the frozen sandwiches in tin foil, and bake it for 20 minutes. This leaves the bread toasty and much more fresh.
So, I commend Jimmy Dean for his brilliant new product, and I encourage you to save your Starbucks money for something fabulous to reward your frugal lifestyle!!
