So last night, I fully intended to go to bed early, but got into fun conversation with my sister-in-law who called from San Francisco. It was 11:00 PM when I got in bed to work my crossword puzzle, and for this reason, I am ridiculous. When the alarm went off at 5:01 AM, I was hurting and was quite sad that it was also really cold outside. Really cold. I made it to class on time, but forgot a water-bottle and a towel. Now, of course, on the day that I am seriously under-rested, we had to do an eight-mile time trial team ride. This was, no joke, seriously intense.
Each of our bikes was rigged to the computer, so that on the big screen we each had a little bike that corresponded with us. When we rode fast, the little bike on the screen went fast. All the little bikes raced against each other on the 8 mile graph on screen. It was a relatively hilly course, and I came in dead last, sports-fans. Even the newbie who just bought her bike like three weeks ago beat me by a couple of minutes. Now, I know that I was tired, BUT, I would have been dead last anyway, because I am a lazy cyclist. I know this about myself. As soon as I get on that trainer, I want to quit. My posture stinks, I can never remember if I should be in the big or small ring when I am riding uphill, which means that I frantically shift gears all over the place which in turn slows me down. I'm fidgety, and if I take a drink of water, I come to a complete halt. It is the worst. All of these behaviors cause me to come in dead last.
After climbing off my bike in shame, I schlepped myself home. There was no swim today, as the pool was closed for a meet. Ivan and I watched the wiggles and decorated the Christmas tree.
Decorating the Christmas tree with Ivan is one of the poorest ideas that I have had this year. Immediately upon opening the ornament box, Ivan picked up the commemorative ornament that my mom gave me the year that Elliott and I got married, and threw it across the room so that is shattered into one trillion glass shards. After blocking off the room and vacuuming it within an inch of its life (while Ivan screamed inconsolably above the din of the electrolux), I attempted to continue tree decoration. I began hanging a set of tin red peppers that Elliott received as a Christmas gift and noticed that every time I turned around to hang a new pepper, the one I had hung previously disappeared. After much searching on my hands and knees, I noticed that Ivan was surreptitiously stuffing peppers into his diaper, which was, by the way, dirty. I will spare you the details of that clean-up job. Suffice it to say that it involved boiling water.
After this, Ivan had some lunch and went down for a nap, during which I took a blissful shower alone. When he woke up, we headed out to run errands and brush up on his swim skills. At home, we read Goodnight Gorilla and Goodnight Moon. Meant to do Gilad, but it is not going to happen. Getting ready to knit!!
