Saturday: 20 Mile Run and A Bit of Yoga

Today, I was up when my alarm went off and I was at Percy Warner Park at 6:00 AM sharp. I had a great 3.5ish mile warm-up run before starting off on the rest of the 20 miles in all run. Now, ultimately, I feel that the social and competitive structure of our running group has changed. I used to look forward to getting up and running and chatting for a couple or so hours, but now most of my chat group is running later or not at all, and those that are left are hauling. There is not a lot of chatter, and I usually end up falling off in the end and running the last four or five miles alone with my headphones in. Also, I find that my running self esteem is rather low, and I feel quite defensive.
For instance, we have a new runner in the group who is so pleasant and I was asking her about her upcoming marriage and consequently told her that I was married and had a two-ish year old. She replied that I was great for still getting out and running, as a lot of people have babies and just use it as an excuse to give up. For whatever reason, I immediately decided that she was telling me that even though I was ridiculously slow, I could console myself with at least being able to drag myself along behind the group. This was silly of me, but a good illustration of how insecure my running is making me. Its always been my strongest thing.
My splits were actually better today than usual, but I still finished more slowly. I need to do some research on marathon pacing and how many more 20 mile runs I should fit in before Boston. I will put that on the list for this week.
At home, we headed for Starbucks and I ate TWO of their breakfast sandwiches, as I had burned 2000 calories on my run. I finished off my day with Yogurt World.
Bought a copy of Born to Run today. Its a quick read and should be finished tomorrow or so.

Friday: Swim and Work and Such

Made it to swim on time today and the pool is now at long course on Fridays. This is great for my swim, but long course means longer swim, because it is in meters and not yards. Steven had a great workout for us, and his girlfriend came by to meet and say hello to everyone. Workout as follows:
  • 300 warmup
  • 4 x 50 kick drill
  • 4 x 50 swim drill
  • 2 x 400 pull
  • 4 x 100 swim
  • 300 kick
  • 100 cool down
It was 2700 meters in all, but I can't remember any more of it than I listed.
Ivan and I headed home after this. For the first awful time today, Ivan wrenched away from my hold today and sprinted willy nilly across the parking lot. It was so frightening. I felt like I saw his whole tiny life flash in front of me. I chased him down safely, but it am now going to have to leash him for even short trips to and from the car, and NOW, I sound like I am talking about a dog.

At home, I put on grownup clothes with pants and a jacket and headed into work. It really is pretty exciting to put on something that isn't tatty yoga pants and a fleece sweatshirt. I felt really fancy in heels and pants. Work was great, and I even had time to stop into a couple of shops on the way home. Such a nice day.
Back at home, I made Ivan and I a delicious dinner sat down to watch Coco, before Chanel with Audrey Tautou . Husband brought home Yogurt World!! Pretty Good. 20 mile run tomorrow assuming I can make it out of bed.

Thursday: Run, Trainer Ride, and Gilad

So today, I was up and out to run after breakfast. It is warming up, which is very thrilling, but I am just not running all that well right now. Just not as fast as I want to be and it may be because I am spreading myself rather thin with the swimming, the running, the speed work, the biking. Or maybe just not working any of those things hard enough, I am actually swimming faster, however. My bike has no choice to improve since I am riding at least once a week instead of a couple of times a year. So, maybe running is just slipping down the tubes.
At home, I took Ivan to practice his swimming. He is learning to kick and pull up on the wall. Along with being obsessed with The Wiggles, Ivan is obsessed with lollipops or as he says "pee pops". It is pretty hysterical, and he has no shame about discussing "pee pops" with anyone who will make eye contact with him. He has been shaming Donna and Mary Ann, who work at the front desk at the gym, by asking them hopefully for a "pee pop" every morning for the last week. If you say "hi" to Ivan, he will immediately ask you for a pee pop. I can only assume that this is the behavior of a hardened addict. Once, in San Francisco, a frenzied man approached my husband and I and said, "Hey, I need money for cocaine. I need money for cocaine. Can I have some money for cocaine?". When Ivan gets really amped up with "pee pop" desperation, I find myself thinking of that man in San Francisco.
Anyway, Ivan got a "pee pop" after swim practice and watched The Wiggles while he ate it. I feel this is his version of heaven.
When Ivan went down for a nap, I hopped on the trainer and rode a Spinervals workout. This was a new virtual reality Spinervals and I rode the Lake Placid Ironman course. It was not as cool as I thought, as most of the DVD was coach Troy yelling into the wind. Also, you did not ever have a rest, you were riding the course the whole time. It was probably great for me, but it was a hard workout. I only rode the trainer for an hour, and 15 minutes of this was cut out of the Garmin because I forgot to turn my watch back on when I got back on the bike after a bathroom break.
After the trainer, I got in a quick Gilad workout and headed in to work, where I had a Godiva meltdown. Godiva makes these m&m-esque chocolate balls, and there were some at work and I ate more than I can count. They were delicious.
Fabulous dinner at home and swim tomorrow!!!!

Wednesday: Double Swim and McDonald's Play Place

Today, I was up at 6:30 AM and still managed to be late for swim. This is because the car seat was in my husband's car and there were not one but TWO dirty diapers. I did manage to get to the pool, however and our coach Steven was back. We had a great workout, which I will try to relay to you:
  • 100 warm up
  • 6 x 100 swim
  • 6 x 75 kick
  • 2 x 400 swim
  • 4 x 200 IM
  • 8 x 25 IM
  • 400 swim
Morning swim was 2800, so I am leaving something out, I think.
At home, Ivan played with his dad and I got ready to head out to have lunch with a friend, which was so much fun. A great visit with my college roommate, before heading home again.
At home, I loaded Ivan into the jog stroller, but it was way too cold for him, SO, I took him to the McDonald's play place so that he could get out a bit of energy. McDonald's play places are bleak, oh so bleak. Terrible people, terrible children. Today, I was forced to crawl all the way up the plastic tower to rescue Ivan when he got stuck in the slide. It reinforced the unfortunate fact that there is no coolness left after children, you have to slither up plastic towers amidst throngs of other people's terrible children to rescue your child who is scared to go down the slide once he is at the top, and because there is no alcohol available to wash away this terrible knowledge, you are forced to buy a happy meal for your child of which you eat at least half. This trip to hell ruins your chances of doing a Gilad workout, I mean do I really need to go on? Anyway, I did go back to evening swim. Shared my lane with Jonathan Whitacre, a great lane mate. Work out as follows:
  • 300 warm up
  • 400 kick
  • 2 x 50 @ :55
  • 400 pull without paddles
  • 4 x 50 swim @ :50
  • 300 pull without paddles
  • 6 x 50 swim @ :50
  • 200 pull without paddles
  • 8 x 50 swim @ :50
  • 100 pull
  • 10 x 25 swim practicing flip turns
  • 100 cool down
3050 meters.

Heading to bed!!

Book Report: American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham

Before I report on this book, I feel like I should tell you that I grew up in Nashville, specifically Old Hickory. We lived practically next door to Andrew Jackson elementary, and I have been to the Andrew Jackson's home The Hermitage more times than I can count. I have taken a walking tour of downtown Nashville, and sat in his pew in the Downtown Presbyterian Church. My parents eat Sunday lunch from time to time in the gift shop on the grounds of The Hermitage, and my husband mountain bikes on Saturdays with Rachel Donelson's (Jackson's wife) great great great great nephew. It is all rather incestuous, but I find that to be typically the case with all things Nashville. When Meacham described the wall paper in the main hall at the Hermitage, I could see it as clearly as I can see most familiar things from my childhood in my mind's eye. It is all I can say by way of explanation.
There are things about Andrew Jackson that I find highly attractive. I love it that he adopted Lincoya after a battle with the Creek nation, sending him home to the Hermitage to be raised as his own. I love it that he refused to clean the boots of a British officer during the revolution, which earned him a saber scar across the face. I love it that when at odds of 125,000 to one BOTH of his assassin's pistols misfired, he attacked (at the age of 68) before anyone else. I am proud of him for disregarding the moral complications of his friend Eaton's wife and keeping his as a friend and an advisor. My favorite is that Andrew Jackson gave Abraham Lincoln his first government job as postmaster.
I cannot disregard that he was the first President to come from outside the Washington circle. He was our seventh president, and he booted out John Quincy Adams for his office. He opened up the White House for his inauguration in an attempt to appear egalitarian, but it was embarrassment and a disaster with drunks galore. He did not have one living blood relative by the time he moved into the White House, and as much as he tried to arrange his wife's family about him, he was often very much alone.
Also, however, it is important to address the Trail of Tears, which was more than terrible. (It was admirably addressed in Charles Frazier's 13 Moons.) If I were to judge, I would say that Jackson's serious antipathy for the American Indians nations began at Fort Mims, where Jackson was sent to quell an attack by the Creek Indians (pgs 30-31). The atrocities committed were almost unreadable for me. Jackson responded to the Fort Mims situation, after others had refused. Jackson, unlike the other that had refused, felt obligated to respond, though he was seriously injured (absolutely his own fault, however, I'll tell you all about it later). Respond he did, and though the uprising was generally over when he arrived, he retaliated. His retaliation ended a year later with the cessation of 23 MILLION acres of Creek land (most of Alabama and some of Georgia), and the famous Battle of Horseshoe Bend and New Orleans. But in a rather bizarre twist of fate, he found and adopted the infant Lincoya whom he raised as his own.
Though you hear much of the love story between he and Rachel and the scandal that followed, the scandal was apparently a rather common thing at a time when information was only available by post and the post was not always that often in what was then the frontier. Next, Andrew was rarely at home with Rachel, as he rarely said no to a call for help or to defend a friend. He wrote great letters, and I do think that he thought of Rachel as his rock and considered her family his own. He just wasn't around very much; he was a fighter and an adventurer, not so much a husband.
Finally, the serious injury that I mentioned above was the result of a RIDICULOUS loss of temper. He had a heard a rumor that the Benton brothers were speaking ill of a friend of Jackson's (no one remembers who the "friend" was) and Jackson decided to attack. He ran into the Benton brothers at a hotel downtown in Nashville, Jesse and Thomas, brandished a whip, then pulled a gun. Jesse shot Jackson first and then John Coffee (friend of Jackson's) pushed Thomas down the stairs. Then one of Rachel's nephews (who just happened to be there) tried to kill Jesse (probably the sharpest tool in that shed) with a knife, just because he thought he should probably be on Jackson's side.
Jackson (quite his own fault) sustained the worst injury and bled through two mattresses. When told his arm would have to be amputated, he said "I'll keep my arm". Jackson kept his arm, was delivered back home to Rachel at the Hermitage, and stayed there for only a month before getting the call to Fort Mims and responding immediately. He refused to allow Thomas Benton to hate him over the whole affair, and in later years, Benton was one of his closest friends. Meacham says this of Jackson, "He knew how to make amends when he had to and possessed enough charm to turn longtime enemies into new friends."
You know, when I read John Adams by David McCullough, I wasn't conflicted when I finished. John Adams lived his life in such a way that there is not one element that you couldn't respect. Adams was well educated, his temper was only lost to righteous causes and never violently, he had the same friends his whole life.
Jackson is different; his flaws are myriad and just terrible. His kindnesses are equally overwhelming. His resolve is unparalled, he would have resigned his post as president rather than allow a bank that he thought took advantage of working men or allow cessation of any part of our country. He was the least educated president to that point, John Quincy Adams was appalled at his election. Jackson never even attempted to follow the establishment. He followed Jackson. When his niece and nephew tried to socially cut the wife of his friend, Jackson sent them home to Nashville and lived in Washington alone rather than give in to their judgement. When Abraham Lincoln was writing his inaugural address, he first asked for everything written by Jackson.
So, I don't know what to say other than that you have to read this book. If you can have an idea of this man, Meacham gives that. But, I wonder if anyone really knew Jackson. I wonder if everyone tiptoed around knowing that while he was quite charming, and his feats were rather amazing, he might decide to whip you or pull a gun no matter how close a friend or family you thought you were. A Nashville legend goes that a visitor after the death of Jackson asked a slave on the property if Jackson had gone to heaven to which the slave replied, "If the General wants to go, who's going to stop him". Everyone must have thought that about him. He didn't free any slaves, by the way. He did say on his death bed, that he would see them all in heaven regardless of color. Nice, but hardly adequate.

Pics are of the cover of the book and John Quincy Adams at his most disgusted. It is my favorite picture of him. Who has the best Bio of John Quincy by the way? He spoke Russian in the 1700's, for the Love of Mike.

Tuesday: Speed Session, Dentist, and Yoga

When my alarm went off his morning, I had no earthly idea why. I mean none. I turned it off, rolled over and was dreaming about Yogurt World when my husband, muffled in his pillow cave, said, "Aren't you getting up to meet Stephen?". At which point it all came back to me, and I hurtled out of bed like a track star and got my clothes on and got out the door.
Now, Stephen and I decided last night that we were going to meet at the rec center treadmills instead of running on the track, and I was totally glad of our decision when I got up, and it was snowing up a blizzard outside. So, I made it to the rec center reasonably on time and Stephen had saved me a treadmill and we started todays workout:
  • 800 warmup
  • 5 x 1600 meter repeats @ 7:03
  • one minute rest in between
  • 400 cool down
Confession: I was supposed to do at least a mile warm up and a mile cool down, but this never happens at treadmills workout. I am out of there after my last interval, and I just didn't warm up enough today.
It was a great workout, and though I was exhausted, I was glad to saunter in the house at 6:50 with 5 and a half miles under my belt. I had a nice baby free shower, and that means a lot to me. Oatmeal for breakfast and then off to the dentist.
Now, today represents a great triumph for me in that I convinced my husband to switch to my dentist, who is the greatest dentist in the WORLD. I have been seeing my dentist since I was FOUR, and even when I lived in Texas, I scheduled my teeth cleanings around my holiday visits at home. You can't let just anyone put their hands in your mouth.
Dr. Barkley is my dad's Sunday School teacher, a great mission worker, and volunteer at our state prison, who has helped many parolees get cars and begin life anew. He was also a frequent speaker at my High School's spiritual emphasis day. I respect him as a steward of life as well as a dental professional.
Anyway, on the drive home, I had a lovely cup of coffee and a fish taco for lunch, before heading in to work. This evening, Ivan is suffering from a cold and and unfortunate addiction to The Wiggles.

Swim tomorrow, and I am dreaming of a trip to Yogurt World.

Monday: Swim and Gilad

So today, I vaulted out of bed at top speed and fixed Ivan some breakfast and made myself a smoothie, from which I left out the ice. I find ice to be rather integral, and it was a bummer, but I was well-fed regardless. Ivan and I made it to swim reasonably on time, and Dennis was substituting for Steven. Workout as follows:

  • 8 x 50 kick
  • 6 x 75 (fly/back/breast)
  • 6 x 75 (fly/back/free)
  • 8 x 50 kick
  • 8 x 50 (IM order) (this meant two 50's of butterfly. so hard)
  • 8 x 50 kick
  • 400 pull
  • 200 pull
  • 200 kick
So this was 3300 meters and a good workout, especially the butterfly strokes. Ivan and I made it home and I headed in to run some errands before going to work. I stopped by Image Optical, where picked up a pair of glasses for my husband and then tried on all sorts of crazy Chanel glasses. In my dream life, I am planning to own several pairs of Chanel sunglasses. They will be huge, and I will look like a hybrid of an Olson Twin and Jackie O.
I next headed in to work, where I had some soup and tea for dinner and then headed home to get in a Gilad workout. Also, at home, I learned that IVAN HAS LEARNED HOW TO GET OUT OF HIS BED. This is terrible news as it is hard for us to keep him in time out or have him stay in bed for his nap. I feel certain that a hardcore battle of the wills is about to start, and I must be the winner!!!
Track workout tomorrow at 6:00 AM.
